John R. “Jack” McNamara, 84, of 60 Cherry Rd., Ithaca, NY, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at the Hospicare Residence.

 

Born October 14, 1925, in Sayre, PA, he was a son of the late Richard B. and Catherine Imeldia (Downes) McNamara.  After graduation from Waverly High School in 1944, John proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  In 1949 he was married to Edna Mae (Haight) McNamara, who survives him.  John retired as a project manager from IBM Owego with over 35 years of service. 

Jack was active in the Waverly American Legion Post 492 from World War II until the present.  He served as Department of New York State Commander for the term of 1961-1962.  He has served on both National and State American Legion Committees over the years and was currently serving on the Finance Committee of the Department of New York.

Jack was the President of the Class of "44" and continued to plan their yearly class get togethers. Jack took great pleasure in his golf outings and was a member at Newman Golf Course . He was an avid Notre Dame fan.

In addition to his beloved wife of 61 years, John is survived by his daughters,Jacquelyn (Stephen) Ripley of Rockledge, FL and Ann (Nick Barra) McNamara of Lansing ; grandchildren, P. Terry (Sandra) Farish III, Jennifer (Tim) Rogers, Stephen M. Ripley, and Marianne Ripley; great grandchildren, Ashley & Haley Farish, Connor Radley and Elise Rogers.  John also leaves behind a brother, William (Lois) McNamara of Trumansburg as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Richard (Mary) McNamara and Joseph McNamara.

Family will be present to receive friends at Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Rd., Lansing, NY on Sunday, February 7 from 2 – 5pm.  A Funeral Mass, officiated by Fr. Scott Kubinski, will be held at All Saints Church, Lansing, NY, on Monday, February 8, at 11:30am.   www.lansingfuneralhome.com
