Elizabeth Owens-Roe, 80, of Danby, NY, passed away on April 19, 2026. She was forever a supportive, encouraging and hard-working wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, friend and grandmother. She will be deeply missed. Liz, as most knew her, was born in Loch Lomond, Scotland to the late Delbert and Mary (MacLean) Owens. She was proud of her Scottish heritage and this bonded her deeply with her grandson.
Liz earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cornell University. She taught communication and media studies at Cornell University, Ithaca College, and SUNY Cortland. She was a creative problem solver and mentor to countless students, known for her compassion, sound advice, and refreshingly honest wisdom. She was not one to ‘mince’ words. Her teaching and encouragement inspired both her students and her children to pursue their passions and life goals.
Over the years, Liz was also active in her community as a Master gardener and Danby Area News Editor. A Saskatchewan farm girl at heart, she enjoyed her many dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, goats, ponies and horses. She also had many hobbies: cooking, gardening, photography, painting, history, archaeology, and following world news and politics. She will be best remembered for her kind heart, tenacity, inclusive “down-to-earth” demeanor, humor, and zest for life.
Liz was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert C. Roe. Liz is survived by her children, Rebekah Sutton and Nicole (Fuzz) Ball; grandson, Haiden Ball; sister, Gillian MacLean; and her beloved black lab, Bella.
In this past year, Liz received invaluable assistance from her wonderful staff, caretakers, nurses and doctors at Schuyler Hospital, Elderwood at Waverly, and Robert Packer Hospital. Please know how deeply grateful we are for your kindness and compassion during this difficult journey. Your smiles made a difference.
In keeping with Liz’s wishes, services will be private for the family.
