John James Worsell

September 12, 1947 — February 22, 2026

Lansing, NY

John "Butch" James Worsell, age 78, of Lansing, NY, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his loving family on February 22, 2026. Born on September 12, 1947, to John and Barbara Worsell, John was a man of steadfast character whose life was defined by hard work and a deep respect for the land.

John worked his whole life to support and provide for his family. As a young man, he worked for Cargill before dedicating many years as a Dairy Herdsman, a role that reflected his lifelong connection to animals and the earth. He later spent 14 years at Cornell University and finally retired from the Lansing Central School District after 10 years of service.

John truly would rather be outside than anywhere else. He spent all his free time hunting and cutting firewood; while he loved all hunting, he was especially good at hunting white-tail deer. A true provider, he took great pride in supporting his household through his efforts. Whether he was tending to his expansive gardens or raising animals, John worked tirelessly to ensure his family was always well-fed and cared for. He often met life’s challenges and uncertainties with his favorite bit of wisdom: “You never know.” His dedication to self-sufficiency and his lifelong hard work were the hallmarks of his character.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Cheryl Worsell. He was a devoted father to his three children and their spouses: Eric and Lesa Worsell, Kerri and Michael Goad, and Adam Worsell and Michelle Canfield.

His legacy lives on through his eight grandchildren: Benjamin Worsell, LeeAnn Worsell, Mya Worsell, Parker Worsell, Makayla and Richard Scott, Kylie Eastmon, Kaitlyn Eastmon, and Donavan Ashley. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Maddilyn Hollenbeck and Blake Scott, and was filled with anticipation for the arrival of his newest great-grandchild, soon to be born.

John was predeceased by his mother, father, and sister, Julia (Judy).

John was the cornerstone of his family, providing wisdom, strength, and support to every generation that followed him. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in John’s memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to support the search for a cure.
