Ralph Roger Barnard (Roger), age 86, formerly of Lansing, NY, passed away at home in Ithaca on May 21, 2013.

Born July 14, 1926, Roger was a son of the late Ralph H. and Dorothy Alice Hopkins Barnard.

A graduate of Cornell University's School of Engineering and the George Washington University School of Law, Roger served in NROTC through his college years and later served active duty in the US Navy.

Roger was a past member of Ithaca Rotary and Lansing Lions Club.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Elizabeth Phillippi.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Eleanor Cooke Barnard; their children, Anne Cooke Miller, Ralph Roger Barnard, Jr. (Maureen), and Mary Alice Button (Alan); grandchildren, Danielle Hautaniemi (Stephen Kimball), Conor Hautaniemi, Ralph Barnard III, Jonathan Barnard (Rachel), Andrew Barnard (Hannah), Lincoln Barnard, Sarah Tsipouroglou (Michael), Christopher Phillippi, Jennifer Phillippi, and Nathan Phillippi; daughter-in-law Debra Barnard; son-in-law Carey Phillippi; and great grandchildren, Miles, Teija, Julianna, Autumn, and Ezra. He is also survived by three sisters and two brothers, Mary, James, Sarah, David, and Nancy.

After a stint with IBM, his legal career was spent largely at Cornell and then as the founding partner of the Ithaca law firm of Barnard and Brown. Roger helped establish as one of its earliest members the Central New York Patent Law Association. After retiring, he devoted himself to the family that was the focal point of his life and to the interests that were regular subjects of dinner table and lakeside conversation, ranging from business and politics to assorted handyman projects, football, and his lifetime allegiance to the Chicago Cubs. In his later years, his Christian faith grounded him in dealing with the challenges of everyday living and manifested itself in his leading of Sunday services at Lansing Residential Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Roger’s name may be directed to the Memorial Haiti Fund of Lansing United Methodist Church, 32 Brickyard Rd., Lansing, NY 14882.

A Celebration of Life, officiated by his brother-in-law, Howard Fetters, will begin at 1pm, Saturday, May 25, 2013, in the auditorium at Longview, 1 Bella Vista Drive, Ithaca, NY. Burial at Lansingville Cemetery, Lansing, NY, will be at a later date.
