Life Story

Retha Lynn Cazel, 62, of South Corning, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at her home.  Born in Okinawa, Japan, she was the daughter of James Edward Cazel, Sr. and Betty (Lola) Cazel.  When Retha moved to Corning she was working as a development engineer for Corning Incorporated.  During that time her love for yoga grew until she courageously walked away from 10 years of corporate life to teach yoga full-time, both at her studio and at Corning Community College. Yoga inspired Retha and she was a radiant teacher. Her classes were a delight, full of laughter, compassion, and learning. Retha always had a remarkable story and words of wisdom to share with her students. Retha was a life-long learner. In addition to her degree in mathematics and physics from the University of North Carolina she also studied Ayurvedic medicine and of course obtained numerous certifications in teaching yoga and meditation. Retha was also a board member of the Keuka yacht club and a docent at the Rockwell museum. She loved people and was well known and loved throughout the community. It was always a pleasure to see Retha walking towards you with her big smile, warm eyes, and kind words. It seemed that wherever she went people were happy to see her. However, Retha’s greatest joy was raising her beloved grandson, Zachary. Creating a solid foundation and a healthy, loving home for Zachary was a labor of love for Retha. She was so proud of the wonderful young man he has become. Retha was also tough, she didn’t give up, even in the face of her struggle with sickness she lived a life of integrity. Retha achieved what we all hope to do. Live a life that makes a difference.  Retha touched the lives of so many. Whether in her yoga classes, on campus, in the community, or at home, Retha’s life made the world a better place. Her shining face and spirit will be missed.
