Maureen Hughes

This is Michael Hughes, Maureen’s son, and also Sharon Castanteen, Maureen’s spouse and life partner.

We are writing to share a quiet moment of remembrance with you all. One year ago today, on September 29th, Maureen passed away. It was her 69th birthday.

Maureen was truly a wonderful mother and spouse—a loving, generous anchor for us, whose heart was always wide open. As a mother, she offered unconditional support, and a constant, warm presence through every stage of life. As a spouse and partner, she brought deep companionship, loyalty, and a joyful togetherness that filled Sharon’s life with meaning and so much kindness. Maureen loved us fiercely, and we felt that devotion in everything she did.

As some of you may know, Maureen had been living with Cirrhosis for the three years prior to her passing. She managed her illness as best as she could while coordinating with her doctors… however, she suffered a traumatic fall in July of that year, which accelerated her decline.

She then undertook a heroic effort to regain her strength through physical rehabilitation. The staff who cared for her were enamored with her—not only because of her courageously positive spirit, but because of her tender, heartfelt gratitude for every kindness shown to her. Anyone who knew Maureen will understand—she was genuinely good-natured, selfless, and considerate of others, even in the midst of her own deepest struggles.

Her burial service was held at Willow Glen Cemetery in Freeville, NY—a place close to Mike’s home that held special meaning for her—where she was laid to rest surrounded by a close circle of loved ones.
