Judith W. Rumsey

Judith “Judy” W. Rumsey, 76, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2024.

Judy was born on October 5, 1947, to the late Gordon and Melba Wilkinson in Ithaca, NY and grew up in the Fall Creek area of Ithaca. She loved the years in Fall Creek and the many friends she made; most of whom became lifelong friends. She graduated from Ithaca High School in 1964 and went to work at Cornell University, where she remained for 38 years until her retirement as Secretary for the Dean of Human Ecology. Judy helped many undergraduates achieve their goals and, in doing so, developed treasured friendships. In fact, several students said that they would not have graduated if not for her compassion, support, and friendship.  

Upon retirement, Judy continued helping others. She graciously took on the role of her parents’ caregiver and advocate for more than 10 years.

Judy loved the nature retreat that Charlie and she built together called Heron Hill, which they created upon Charlie’s retirement.  She never slowed down, but was always looking for the next big project, whether another flower bed or another building. She enjoyed the many years of watching the Koi fish grow and play in the pond, the deer that came to visit every day, and the family of Canadian Geese that came every year to build their nests. Judy’s magic can be seen in the many flower beds she made into English tea gardens. We see her touches on every corner of Heron Hill. She cherished Heron Hill and will forever be present there. She has left behind a hole that will not be filled for her family; her laughter, joyful nature, and caring enthusiasm cannot be replaced. Judy will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Charles J. Rumsey of Groton, and her son, Fredrick P. Rumsey of Nashville, TN.  

Family and friends are invited to a period of visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Road, Lansing, NY 14882. Immediately following, a memorial service will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
