Jolan E. Balog

Jolan Elizabeth Balog, 78, of Auburn and formerly of Lansing, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, while surrounded by family.  Born in Philadelphia, PA, on January 30, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Jolan Buday Papp.

Jolan met her husband, Charles D. Balog, Sr., in 1960 on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City and he proposed the following year.  They first lived in Ohio before moving to Illinois and then Florida.  In 1974, they settled in Lansing, where Jolan lived until 2012.  She retired from Cornell University after over twenty years of employment as an administrative assistant in the School of Human Ecology.

The most important thing in Jolan’s life was her family, and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She also enjoyed cooking.  She was a member of the Red Hat Society “Gorgeous Gals” and “Cayuga Lake Divas,” and the Lansing Seniors.

Jolan is survived by her sons, Charles Balog, Jr. (Stacey) and Chad Balog (Lori), both of Auburn; grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas and Gabriella; brother, Alex Papp (Angela); and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Charles Sr., on September 2, 2001; her son, Christopher Balog; and her brother, John Papp.

The family will be present to receive friends on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Road, Lansing, NY 14882.  A funeral service will immediately follow at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Interment will be in Sharon Cemetery in Caldwell, OH, on Saturday, September 1, 2018.

Jolan worked as my administrative assistant in the Department of Human Development at Cornell for many years. We had a wonderful working relationship. I offer my sincere condolences to her family.

I was shocked to learn of Jolan's passing. For years we were on the same bowling team and she often stopped in Warren Hall to see me. She was the sweetest most wonderful person. I lost track of her a long time ago but when I saw Chris' obituary earlier this year, I did go to the calling hours. I slipped a note with my contact information into her pocket and was hoping to hear from her. She was the greatest and I just loved her. My sincerest sympathy goes out to her family.I

I only met Jolan on a couple of occasions and was impressed with what a lovely person she was. Through the years I have known how much she meant to her sister-in-law, my dear friend, Carolyn Waite and her family. I extend my sincere condolences to all of Jolan's family. May God be your comfort.

For many years, I rode the TCAT bus from Firestation #4 with Jolan. She was fun to talk to on the trip to Cornell. I lost touch with her after she retired, but I've often thought kindly of her since then. My sincere condolences to her family.
