George Edward Hascup

November 18, 1942 — June 23, 2025

Ithaca, NY

George Edward Hascup, 82, a long-time Ithaca resident, passed away Monday, June 23, 2025, from heart failure. He had been on his morning walk by the lake with his little dog, his good friend Jim and his kind caregiver Anna. The day before, he had a visit with all of his three children, and two of his grandchildren, where he regaled the grandchildren with funny stories from his childhood. George loved his family, his many good friends, and his beloved dogs. He loved dancing, and the associated friendships and community. He was devoted to his vocation as architect and professor at Cornell University where he remained a Professor Emeritus of Architecture. His colleagues at Cornell Art, Architecture and Planning described his tenure as an “extraordinary over 50-year commitment to Cornell helped shape and strengthen design education at AAP for generations.”

Born in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, on November 18, 1942, George attended Pratt Institute, and then University of California Berkeley, where he received his degree in Architecture. While in Berkeley, he met and married Bonnie (Sabina) Gayo, and they welcomed their first child, Kirsten. The young family soon moved back to the East Coast, where George began his career as an architect at Roche Dinkeloo (a direct outgrowth of Eero Saarinen and Associates). George and Bonnie had two more children, Kaitlin and Jacob, and settled in Ithaca, New York in the early 1970’s, where George continued his life’s work establishing his practice, becoming a professor of Architecture and designing multiple houses and buildings in the finger lakes region.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sabina; his children Jacob, Kaitlin, and Kirsten, and his grandchildren, Georgia, Aksel, and Isadora. His first grandchild, Benjamin, died two years before he did. He is also survived by his only sister Nancy, his cousin Scott Symon (a true brother), his niece and nephew Heather and Jamie and their families, and many devoted friends. Thank you to Anna, his caregiver, for her meaningful help in recent times.

The family will gather for a private burial, and plans will be forthcoming for a public memorial and celebration of his life.
