Beverly Szewczyk

It is with great sadness to announce that Beverly Patte Szewczyk of Rochester (Penfield), NY has passed away peacefully on March 20, 2020 at the age of 78.

Bev was born in Holyoke, MA. She spent her childhood in Dryden, NY and graduated from Ithaca College with a degree in Physical Education.  She spent her child raising years in Rochester (Brighton), NY and Madison, CT. Bev loved the outdoors, sports, and was involved in many PTA activities.  She passed these passions on to her children and grandchildren.

Bev was an amazing woman who was an inspiration to anyone who knew her.  Even with her blindness, she always had a positive outlook on life.  She was a fun loving spirit and had a recognizable laugh that brightened up any room. Her incredible strength was very evident during her battle to survive numerous medical issues over that last several months. She lived a fantastic life.

Bev is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Richard Szewczyk; her son, Todd Szewczyk and wife Kim (Hollis, NH); and her daughter, Kathleen Kenney and husband Dan (Jamison, PA).  She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Lindsey, Kyle and Brian Szewczyk and Kylie and Danny Kenney; her brother, George Patte and wife Mary; and sister, Mary Ann Hester and husband Gerry. She is predeceased by her parents, George and Patricia Patte; and her, sister Kathy Malison.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 13, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 43 Gebhardt Road, Penfield, NY 14526, with a reception to follow.  For those who cannot attend, the Mass will be streamed on the church’s website at www.sjcpenfield.com.  Interment will be Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. in East Lawn Cemetery, 934 Mitchell Street, Ithaca, NY 14850. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Bev’s name to ABVI (Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired), 500 South Clinton Street, Rochester, NY 14520.

Wow, just heard about Bev's passing from her brother George. I have known Bev since the 1950's when we all grew up together on West Main Street in Dryden, NY. Bev was voted as Queen or Princess of a special Dryden event back in those days. I can still see her riding in a convertible at the head of the parade with the Grand Marshall. As I recall she was also a cheer leader for the Dryden Lions basketball team and was always leading the crowd to be louder! Lastly I remember her and Dick's wedding reception held in the back yard of her parents Stewart Ave home in Ithaca. Her brother, I and a few others who were under the age of 18, the legal drinking age in NY at that time, enjoyed the free drinks supplied by her father known affectionately as Big George. Bev, your spirit will be with us forever!

From the moment we all met Bev, we fell in love with her wonderful laugh and her love of life. We got to know that laugh and really looked forward to it because of all the family parties and get-togethers Bev and Dick were able to come to. Nothing ever seemed to set her back - as one of the most independent women I have ever known. She never wanted anyone to do for her, she wanted and did it herself. Her strength, vigor and fortitude served as a role model to anyone she touched. She is and will be missed by all of us, but she is looking down at us right now waiting for that next laugh to come - and it will! Rest in peace, Bev.

Our condolences to Mr. Szewczyk, Kathleen, Todd and your entire family. Mrs. S. was always the sweetest and most fun loving woman when I visited the Kenneys. My favorite memory of Mrs. S. was when Dan's family Rottweiler took a bite out of her ass. Rest in Peace Mrs. S My mom sure will join your party

My grandma was an amazing women who will always hold a special place in my heart. I will miss her and her laugh dearly, she was the queen of our family. Never will I ever forget when she told my grandpa to get the pie out of our fridge and he was like yeah yeah I got it but then ended up forgetting it. So much love!

Gema, I will miss you dearly. Even though blindness should be a major obstacle in someones life you never showed it as a setback. You were the light at all of our family gatherings - always making the family laugh. I will miss our shopping trips to kohls and you never missed a softball game. Thank you for showing me how to overcome the obstacles life brings us all.
Love always,

Kylie Mar 24 2020 12:00 AM
