Helen M. Fairand, age 92, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011, at her home on Main St. in Freeville, NY.

Born August 25, 1918, in Brockport, NY, Helen was the daughter of the late Perry Thomas and Julia (Cotter) Mercer.  A 1935 graduate of Brockport Normal School at the age of 16, Helen was also a member of Arethusa Sorority, the first and oldest sorority at the school.  She went on to graduate from Brockport State.  During WWII Helen received recognition for her patriotic service to her country as a member of the Citizen’s Service Corps and The U.S. Civilian Protection Organization.  She was a member of the NY State Retired Teachers Association, after having taught for 27 years, and retired in 1983 from Dryden Elementary School. 

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Paul C. Fairand; a sister, Eunice Leutze and her brothers, Jim, Robert and Perry Mercer. 

She is survived by four children, Paul Fairand, Jr. of Freeville, Kevin (Kathy) Fairand of Freeville, Abby (Steven) McCabe of Denver, CO, and Steven Fairand of Ithaca; grandchildren, Staci and Chris McCabe both of Denver, CO; and extended family.

A prayer service, officiated by Fr. Leo J. Reinhardt, will begin at 11 am, Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Rd., Lansing, NY.  Burial at Willow Glen Cemetery in Dryden will be delayed.
