Gordon Richard Wilkinson, age 90, of 10 Asbury Rd., Lansing, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 15, 2010, after a lengthy illness.


Born in Ithaca, NY, on June 29, 1919, he was a son of the late John and Octavia (Jacob) Wilkinson.  A lifelong area resident, Gordon played on numerous Ithaca baseball leagues before joining the US Army, where he proudly served 38 months in the Pacific during WWII as Sergeant in the Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery.  Gordon was a Pearl Harbor survivor; the last in Tompkins County, and was in campaigns at the Islands of Guadalcanal and Bougainville.  Upon his return to Ithaca, he learned to fly at the old Tompkins County Airport, which is now the Hangar Theatre.  Gordon worked for over 30 years at Cornell University, retiring as Project Manager for Campus Life. A true outdoorsman, he was an avid deer hunter with bow and gun, and enjoyed swimming, fishing and tending his homing pigeons.  He leaves his family with many fond memories of RV camping trips and boating excursions.  Gordon was a life member of the Veteran’s Volunteer Firemen Association of Ithaca, the Torrent Hose Co. #5 of Ithaca and Post 961 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ithaca.  Other memberships included Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, National Rifleman Association, Tompkins County Rod & Gun Club, where he enjoyed shooting skeet for many years, and he was a Board Member of Lake View Cemetery Association. 


In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by his sisters, Evelyn W. Read, Marie A. Wilkinson; and his brothers, John, Ernest and Roger Wilkinson.


Gordon is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Melba (Hill) Wilkinson; daughters, Judith Rumsey and her husband, Charles of Freeville, NY, Lynn Wilkinson and her husband, Bob Freudenheim of Taos, NM; a cousin, Donald Wilkinson of Ithaca; and several nieces.

Family will be present to receive friends at Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Rd., Lansing, NY, on Sunday, February 21, from 2 – 4pm, and on Monday, February 22, from 12 – 1pm.  At the conclusion of calling hours, a funeral service with Military Honors, officiated by Rev. Alan Kinney, will begin at 1pm.  Burial will follow at Lake View Cemetery in Ithaca.
