Ethel Specker, of 611 North Aurora Street, passed away on February 24, 2009. Beloved by all who knew her throughout her long life, she is missed by family and friends. Ethel was born in Astoria, Queens, on July 22, 1919. She graduated from Hunter College in NYC, where she was Phi Beta Kappa, as well as a medal- winning fencer. Following her graduation, she worked at the American Museum of Natural History, and then as matriarch of the Specker household, consisting of husband, Charles, a NYC policeman, and four sons. Ethel honed her skills at cooking, a passion she had throughout her life. She was most happy feeding family and friends alike, earning her the label, Master Chef of the Universe. Ethel was also an accomplished, award-winning photographer, as well as an avid gardener. Ethel is survived by sons, Peter, John (Susan Leader), Alex, Donald (Christine Sanchirico); seven grandchildren; and close friend, Delora Specker. An informal memorial will be held at 611 North Aurora Street on Sunday, March 8, from 12 to 4 p.m. All who knew Ethel are welcome.
